Car Accident Lawyer Near Journal Square, Jersey City

Injured in a Car Accident Near Journal Square? We Can Help You. No Fee Unless We Win. Journal Square is one of the busiest transit hubs and most crash-prone intersections in all of Jersey City, and our team of personal injury lawyers has recovered millions of dollars for accident victims in this neighborhood. We proudly represent injured drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and transit riders throughout Jersey City and all of New Jersey.

Journal Square sits at the crossroads of some of the most dangerous corridors in Hudson County — Kennedy Boulevard, Sip Avenue, Summit Avenue, and Bergen Avenue all converge in this neighborhood, funneling tens of thousands of vehicles, buses, and pedestrians through a dense urban grid every day. Fatal crashes, pedestrian strikes, bus collisions, and multi-vehicle pileups are a regular occurrence here. If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident near Journal Square, the experienced attorneys at Bhatt Law Group are ready to fight for the compensation you deserve.

Call us now at (201) 798-8000 or text us at (201) 676-2844 for a free, no-obligation consultation. Every car accident case we handle is on a contingency fee basis — you pay nothing unless we win.

Why Journal Square Is One of the Most Dangerous Areas in Jersey City for Car Accidents

Journal Square — the commercial and transit heart of Ward C — is home to the Journal Square Transportation Center, one of the busiest PATH stations in the entire system. The neighborhood is undergoing massive redevelopment, with dozens of high-rise residential towers under construction or recently completed along Summit Avenue and surrounding blocks. This combination of legacy infrastructure, explosive population growth, and heavy transit traffic creates a uniquely dangerous environment for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

  • Converging major arterials. Kennedy Boulevard, Sip Avenue, Bergen Avenue, Summit Avenue, and Newark Avenue all feed into the Journal Square area. These roads carry high-speed traffic from multiple directions into a dense commercial and residential district that was originally designed for far lower traffic volumes. The result is chronic congestion, aggressive driving, and frequent intersection collisions.
  • The Journal Square Transportation Center. The PATH station generates enormous pedestrian traffic at all hours of the day. Commuters exiting the station cross multiple lanes of traffic on Sip Avenue, Summit Avenue, and JFK Boulevard to reach buses, cars, and surrounding businesses. Drivers navigating around stopped buses, jaywalking pedestrians, and rideshare vehicles picking up passengers create a constant stream of conflict points.
  • Massive construction and development activity. Journal Square is one of the fastest-developing neighborhoods in New Jersey. Projects like the Journal Squared towers on Summit Avenue, the 54-story tower at 505 Summit Avenue, and multiple other high-rises under construction mean that construction vehicles, lane closures, detoured traffic, and reduced visibility from scaffolding and barriers are a daily presence. These conditions increase crash risk significantly.
  • Bus route concentration. Multiple NJ Transit bus routes converge at and around the Journal Square Transportation Center. Buses stopping in travel lanes, passengers crossing mid-block between bus stops, and vehicles attempting to pass stopped buses create a high-risk environment for both vehicle-on-vehicle and vehicle-on-pedestrian collisions.
  • Five Corners intersection. The Five Corners area — where Summit Avenue, Newark Avenue, and Communipaw Avenue converge just south of Journal Square — is one of the most confusing and dangerous intersections in Jersey City. The unusual five-way geometry creates blind spots, ambiguous right-of-way, and frequent angle collisions as drivers from multiple directions attempt to navigate the intersection simultaneously.

Dangerous Streets and Intersections Near Journal Square

Our attorneys have handled car accident cases from throughout the Journal Square area. The following streets and intersections are among the most hazardous based on police reports, recent crash data, and our own case experience:

  • Sip Avenue at Summit Avenue. In March 2025, a 73-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a Ford F250 at this intersection during the morning rush. The victim suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at Jersey City Medical Center. This intersection sits at the southern edge of the Journal Square Transportation Center and sees extremely heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic throughout the day.
  • Sip Avenue at Route 1 & 9. In October 2024, a 43-year-old motorcyclist named Steven Brown was killed when his motorcycle collided with a GMC at the intersection of Sip Avenue and Routes 1 & 9. Two Newark women were later charged in connection with his death — one for driving with a suspended license causing death, and the other for obstruction. This high-speed intersection where a local street meets a major highway is one of the deadliest in the city.
  • Kennedy Boulevard at Newark Avenue (Journal Square). In May 2025, a car went airborne out of a parking garage at the intersection of JFK Boulevard and Newark Avenue, crashing onto the sidewalk just feet from a daycare center. While the driver survived, this incident highlights the dangers posed by the steep grades, multi-level parking structures, and heavy vehicle traffic in the immediate Journal Square area.
  • Summit Avenue at Mercer Street. In May 2025, a school bus crash at this intersection injured five people, including four children. A car making a left turn struck the school bus, causing it to hit a traffic light post. Summit Avenue carries heavy traffic between the Journal Square Transportation Center and the residential neighborhoods to the south, and its intersections are frequent crash locations.
  • Kennedy Boulevard at Sip Avenue. This intersection is where the two busiest roads in the Journal Square area cross. Vehicles heading to and from the Transportation Center, combined with pedestrians crossing in all directions, buses pulling in and out of stops, and drivers making aggressive turns, produce a high volume of rear-end, T-bone, and pedestrian crashes year-round.
  • Bergen Avenue through Journal Square. Bergen Avenue’s commercial corridor runs through the heart of the neighborhood with shops, restaurants, and residential buildings lining both sides. Double-parked vehicles, pedestrians stepping into the road between parked cars, and delivery trucks blocking travel lanes are persistent hazards that lead to sideswipe and rear-end crashes.
  • Central Avenue at Manhattan Avenue. In September 2025, a two-vehicle crash at this intersection — just blocks from Journal Square — resulted in injuries, a gas leak, and road closures on southbound Central Avenue and eastbound Manhattan Avenue. The collision between an Audi and a Toyota left one driver with head and neck pain.

If you were injured at any of these intersections — or anywhere else near Journal Square — contact Bhatt Law Group immediately for a free case evaluation.

Types of Car Accidents We Handle Near Journal Square

The unique combination of transit infrastructure, commercial activity, and converging arterial roads makes Journal Square the site of virtually every type of motor vehicle accident. Our Jersey City car accident lawyers have extensive experience handling:

  • Pedestrian accidents. The Journal Square Transportation Center generates massive foot traffic, and pedestrians crossing Sip Avenue, Summit Avenue, and Kennedy Boulevard face extreme risk from turning vehicles, buses, and distracted drivers. The fatal pedestrian strike at Sip and Summit Avenues in March 2025 is a tragic reminder of how dangerous this area is for people on foot.
  • Rear-end collisions. Stop-and-go traffic on Kennedy Boulevard and Sip Avenue during rush hours, combined with buses making frequent stops, creates conditions where rear-end crashes happen daily. Distracted drivers looking at phones or GPS are the most common cause.
  • T-bone (broadside) accidents. Red-light running at the busy intersections of Kennedy Boulevard, Sip Avenue, and Bergen Avenue leads to devastating side-impact crashes. The Five Corners intersection is particularly dangerous for angle collisions due to its confusing geometry.
  • Bus accidents. NJ Transit buses are a constant presence in Journal Square. Passengers injured while boarding or exiting buses, pedestrians struck by buses making wide turns, and vehicles colliding with buses at intersections are all cases our firm handles.
  • Motorcycle accidents. The fatal motorcycle crash at Sip Avenue and Route 1 & 9 in October 2024 underscores the extreme danger motorcyclists face near Journal Square, where high-speed traffic from Route 1 & 9 merges with local street traffic. Motorcyclists have less protection and are far more likely to suffer catastrophic or fatal injuries.
  • Uber and Lyft accidents. Rideshare vehicles frequently stop in travel lanes near the Transportation Center to pick up and drop off passengers, creating sudden hazards for trailing vehicles. The complex insurance layering in rideshare accidents requires experienced legal representation to navigate.
  • Hit-and-run accidents. In October 2025, a scooter rider was struck on Kennedy Boulevard near Bentley Avenue — close to Journal Square — by a driver who initially stopped but then fled the scene. Hit-and-runs are disproportionately common in high-traffic areas where drivers can quickly disappear into surrounding streets.
  • Multi-vehicle pileups. Chain-reaction crashes on Kennedy Boulevard through the Journal Square corridor are especially common during morning and evening rush hours. A major multi-car crash on JFK Boulevard at Fairmount Avenue — just north of Journal Square — flipped an SUV and shut down the road entirely.

Common Injuries from Journal Square Car Accidents

The heavy traffic volumes, high vehicle speeds on Kennedy Boulevard and Route 1 & 9, and the constant presence of pedestrians and cyclists near the Transportation Center mean that crash injuries in the Journal Square area tend to be severe. Our car accident attorneys routinely handle cases involving:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Pedestrians struck by vehicles near the Transportation Center and motorcyclists involved in high-speed collisions on Sip Avenue and Route 1 & 9 are at particularly high risk for concussions and severe TBIs that can cause permanent cognitive impairment, memory loss, and personality changes.
  • Whiplash and cervical spine injuries. The sudden deceleration forces in rear-end collisions — the most common crash type in Journal Square’s congested traffic — cause the neck to snap violently forward and back. Symptoms may not appear for 24 to 72 hours, making immediate medical evaluation critical.
  • Herniated and bulging discs. The force of broadside and rear-end impacts compresses the spine and can rupture intervertebral discs. Treatment may require epidural steroid injections, extended physical therapy, or surgical intervention such as discectomy or spinal fusion.
  • Broken bones and fractures. Pedestrians struck by vehicles commonly suffer leg, hip, and pelvic fractures. Vehicle occupants in T-bone crashes frequently sustain arm, wrist, and rib fractures. The school bus crash at Summit and Mercer in May 2025 injured four children — a reminder that even low-speed collisions can cause fractures in vulnerable occupants.
  • Spinal cord injuries and paralysis. High-speed crashes on Route 1 & 9 near Sip Avenue and head-on collisions on Kennedy Boulevard can cause devastating spinal cord damage resulting in partial or complete paralysis. These catastrophic injuries require lifelong medical care and result in the largest damage awards.
  • Internal organ damage. High-speed impacts can cause internal bleeding, organ lacerations, and other life-threatening internal injuries that may not be immediately apparent after the crash. The fatal pedestrian strike at Sip and Summit Avenues in 2025 resulted in severe head trauma — a grim illustration of the forces involved even in pedestrian-vehicle collisions.
  • Psychological injuries. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), driving anxiety, and depression are common among Journal Square crash survivors, particularly those involved in fatal or near-fatal accidents, and those who witnessed traumatic collisions near the busy Transportation Center.

If you are experiencing any of these injuries after a car accident near Journal Square, seek medical attention immediately and then contact our firm.

What to Do After a Car Accident Near Journal Square

If you are involved in a crash anywhere in the Journal Square area, the steps you take in the first hours and days can significantly impact the outcome of your case. Here is what our attorneys recommend:

  • Call 911 immediately. Request police and medical assistance. A Jersey City Police Department crash report is essential evidence in any car accident claim and documents the scene, witness statements, and the officer’s initial assessment of fault while everything is fresh.
  • Seek medical attention right away. Adrenaline masks pain, and injuries like concussions, internal bleeding, and herniated discs may not produce symptoms for hours or days. Jersey City Medical Center at 355 Grand Street is the closest Level II trauma center. Christ Hospital on Palisade Avenue is also nearby. Your medical records create the foundation of your injury claim.
  • Document everything at the scene. Take photographs and video of all vehicles, damage, license plates, the intersection, traffic signals, skid marks, debris, and your visible injuries. Journal Square has extensive surveillance camera coverage from the Transportation Center, surrounding businesses, residential buildings, and traffic cameras — note any cameras you see nearby.
  • Exchange information but limit your statements. Get the other driver’s name, insurance information, license plate number, and contact details. Do not apologize, do not admit fault, and do not speculate about what happened. Even a casual remark can be used against you by insurance adjusters.
  • Do not give a recorded statement to any insurance company. The at-fault driver’s insurer will contact you quickly and push for a recorded statement. Their goal is to minimize your payout or deny your claim. Refer them to your attorney.
  • Contact Bhatt Law Group right away. Call us at (201) 798-8000. The sooner we get involved, the sooner we can preserve surveillance footage from the Transportation Center and nearby businesses, obtain the police report, interview witnesses, and start building your case before critical evidence is lost.

How New Jersey Car Accident Laws Affect Your Journal Square Claim

New Jersey has several laws that directly impact your ability to recover compensation after a car accident near Journal Square. Understanding these rules is critical:

  • No-fault insurance and PIP coverage. New Jersey is a no-fault state, meaning your own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance pays for initial medical expenses and lost wages regardless of who caused the accident. However, PIP coverage has limits — typically $15,000 to $250,000 depending on your policy — and the severe injuries common in Journal Square crashes often exceed those limits quickly.
  • Tort threshold — limited vs. unlimited right to sue. Your insurance policy determines your right to sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering. If you chose “limited tort,” you can only sue if you suffered a qualifying serious injury such as permanent disfigurement, loss of a body part, or a displaced fracture. “Unlimited tort” (full tort) allows you to sue for any injury. Our attorneys will review your policy and advise you on your best options.
  • Modified comparative negligence. Under New Jersey’s comparative fault rule, you can recover damages as long as you are 50% or less at fault for the accident. Your compensation is reduced by your percentage of fault. Insurance companies routinely try to shift blame — our lawyers fight back with evidence and expert analysis.
  • Two-year statute of limitations. You have two years from the date of the accident to file a personal injury lawsuit. Missing this deadline permanently bars your claim. Do not wait — contact us today.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. If the driver who hit you has no insurance or insufficient coverage, you may still recover compensation through your own UM/UIM policy. This is especially relevant for hit-and-run crashes, which are common near the busy Transportation Center area.

When you hire Bhatt Law Group, you get a team of seven experienced attorneys and dedicated paralegals working on your case — not a call center, not a case mill, and not a solo practitioner juggling hundreds of files. Here is what sets us apart:

  • Our Jersey City office is minutes from Journal Square. We are deeply familiar with the streets, intersections, and traffic patterns of the Journal Square neighborhood. We know which buildings and transit facilities have surveillance cameras, how to obtain police reports from the Jersey City Police Department efficiently, and which local medical providers specialize in treating car accident injuries.
  • Three offices across Northern New Jersey. In addition to Jersey City, we have offices in Newark and Hackensack, giving us deep familiarity with the courts, insurance adjusters, and defense attorneys across Hudson, Essex, and Bergen Counties.
  • Over a decade of personal injury experience. We have recovered millions of dollars for car accident victims throughout New Jersey. Our attorneys have tried cases involving catastrophic injuries, wrongful death, and complex multi-party liability.
  • Aggressive negotiation backed by trial readiness. Insurance companies know which firms will actually take cases to trial. Our proven courtroom track record means adjusters take our demand letters seriously — resulting in higher settlements without unnecessary delay.
  • No fee unless we win. We handle every Journal Square car accident case on a contingency fee basis. You pay nothing upfront, and we only get paid when you recover compensation.
  • In-house PIP arbitration team. Unlike most personal injury firms, we have a dedicated PIP arbitration department that ensures your medical providers get paid and your treatment is not interrupted by insurance disputes. You focus on recovering while we handle the billing fights behind the scenes.

Compensation Available After a Journal Square Car Accident

The value of your car accident claim depends on the severity of your injuries, the impact on your daily life and ability to work, and the available insurance coverage. Our attorneys pursue maximum compensation for:

  • Medical expenses. Emergency room visits, hospitalization, surgery, physical therapy, chiropractic care, prescription medications, medical devices, and all future treatment related to your injuries.
  • Lost wages and income. Compensation for time missed from work during your recovery, including salary, hourly wages, bonuses, commissions, and self-employment income.
  • Reduced earning capacity. If your injuries prevent you from returning to your prior occupation or limit the type of work you can perform, you are entitled to compensation for the difference in lifetime earning potential.
  • Pain and suffering. Physical pain, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, and the overall impact of the accident on your well-being. These non-economic damages often represent the largest portion of a serious injury claim.
  • Property damage. Repair or replacement of your vehicle and any personal property damaged in the collision.
  • Wrongful death damages. If you lost a family member in a fatal car accident near Journal Square, our attorneys can help you pursue a wrongful death claim for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and other damages.

Frequently Asked Questions About Journal Square Car Accidents

How much is my Journal Square car accident case worth?

Every case is different. The value depends on the severity of your injuries, the cost of medical treatment, lost income, and the degree of pain and suffering you have endured. Minor soft-tissue injuries may settle for tens of thousands of dollars, while cases involving surgery, permanent disability, or wrongful death can reach six or seven figures. Our attorneys will evaluate your specific situation and provide an honest assessment during your free consultation.

A bus hit me near the Journal Square Transportation Center. Can I sue NJ Transit?

Yes, but claims against NJ Transit involve special rules. NJ Transit is a state agency, and you must file a tort claims notice within 90 days of the accident — far shorter than the standard two-year statute of limitations. Missing this 90-day window can permanently bar your claim. Contact our attorneys immediately if you were injured in a bus accident so we can ensure all deadlines are met.

I was hit as a pedestrian crossing Sip Avenue near the PATH station. Do I have a case?

Almost certainly. Pedestrians struck by vehicles have strong claims against negligent drivers under New Jersey law. Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and exercise caution in areas with heavy foot traffic — and the area around the Transportation Center is one of the busiest pedestrian zones in the city. Even if you were not in a crosswalk, you may still recover compensation if the driver was negligent. Contact us immediately so we can preserve surveillance footage before it is overwritten.

Should I accept the insurance company’s first settlement offer?

Almost never. First offers are calculated to close your claim for as little as possible — often before you understand the full extent of your injuries. Many injuries worsen over time. Our lawyers ensure you do not accept a settlement that fails to account for your future medical needs and long-term losses.

What if the other driver fled the scene after hitting me near Journal Square?

Hit-and-run accidents are unfortunately common in high-traffic areas like Journal Square. If the driver cannot be identified, you can file a claim through your own uninsured motorist (UM) coverage. Our attorneys will also investigate whether surveillance footage from the Transportation Center, nearby businesses, or traffic cameras can identify the at-fault driver.

What is the most dangerous time to drive near Journal Square?

Morning rush hour (7–9 AM) and evening rush hour (4–7 PM) are the most dangerous times due to the convergence of PATH commuters, bus traffic, and vehicles heading to Kennedy Boulevard and Route 1 & 9. The fatal pedestrian strike at Sip and Summit in March 2025 occurred just after 7 AM during the morning rush. Late-night hours also see increased DUI-related crashes on Kennedy Boulevard through the Journal Square corridor.

How long do I have to file a car accident lawsuit in New Jersey?

The standard statute of limitations is two years from the date of the accident. However, if your accident involved a government vehicle or NJ Transit bus, you must file a tort claims notice within 90 days. Missing these deadlines permanently bars your claim, so contact an attorney as soon as possible.

Other Jersey City Neighborhoods and Roads We Serve

Journal Square is not the only area in Jersey City where car accidents are a serious concern. Our firm handles car accident cases across the entire city, including:

  • Kennedy Boulevard. The most dangerous road in Jersey City, running through Journal Square and carrying hundreds of crashes each year from Greenville to North Bergen.
  • Downtown Jersey City. Heavy commuter traffic along Columbus Drive and Marin Boulevard, combined with intense pedestrian and cyclist activity near the Grove Street PATH station, makes Downtown one of the highest-risk neighborhoods in the city.
  • The Heights. Steep hills, narrow streets, and heavy traffic on Palisade Avenue and Central Avenue create unique crash hazards including brake failures and winter ice accidents.
  • Communipaw Avenue. A long arterial road connecting Downtown to Bergen-Lafayette and Greenville, with frequent injury accidents at its intersection with Route 440.
  • Route 1 & 9 (Tonnelle Avenue). A major highway through Jersey City with frequent fatal crashes involving trucks and high-speed traffic, including the deadly Sip Avenue intersection near Journal Square.

No matter where your accident occurred in Jersey City, Bhatt Law Group has the local knowledge and legal experience to handle your case.

Alright! These guys are amazing. I was devastated when I got a three tickets in New Jersey with 12 points in total and fines adding up over $1K. The officer was truly rude, unfair and just took out his bad day on me. At this point I had no idea what to do but I must find some legal help to fight this in court. After getting the tickets, I called a bunch of different law groups trying to see who can help me with this. I was able to talk to many of them and mostly all of them seemed like they wanted to see how much they can get out of me before even hearing out what my concerns where. Then I got around to calling Bhatt Law Group and I was welcome by this lady (whose name I don't know) and she was amazing. She listened and helped me be calm and gave me assurance I am in good hands. She offer pricing and it seemed very reasonable too. I made my payment and then I didn't have anything to worry about till the day of the virtual court. They figured out all my court dates and managed everything on the back end. They would give me updates on what the process is up to. Funny story, on the day of my virtual court session I overslept thinking my court time was at 11 am instead of 9 am and I had my attorney Devin Baer even giving me a call to get me out of bed to attend the zoom. I don't know how many attorneys would do that for their client. Devin was very helpful, professional and understanding. He gave me a call prior to my court session and gave important pointers and even through out the court session he made me feel confident and assure that everything will be okay. So these guys were friendly, helpful and professional but where there any results? OH YEAH! I was able to lower my fines and points to barely nothing. These guys are life savers and will help you legally in any situation where you have been treated unfairly. Thank you Bhatt Law.
